Chapter 1: Intro to Chemistry

 Intro to Chemistry

Why chem? - Lot of chemical reactions take place in metabolism and biology that are understood by the laws of chemistry

Foundation:

  • Matter --> Anything that has weight and takes up space

Ex: Chair, TV, Bottle of water

  • Atom --> Small particle present in everything that has matter; contains smaller particles called protons, neutrons, and electrons

  • Imp:
    # of protons = # of electrons (MOST OF THE TIME)

    • Element -->  Inseparable substance that is made up of atoms that have the same number of protons
    Ex: Hydrogen, Helium, Oxygen

    • Protons --> Particle found in the nucleus (center) of an atom; has a positive charge
    • Neutron --> Particle found with protons; has no charge
    • Electron --> Particle found in orbitals around the center; has negative charge; the more further an electron is from the center, the more energy it will possess

    1. Similar atoms bond together to form a molecule and two or more molecules form an element

Ex: Hydrogen atoms will come together to make hydrogen molecules which in turn create a Hydrogen element

    2.  Different elements come together to form a compound

Ex: H2O (Water) contains 1 hydrogen element and 2 oxygen elements
